Dongguan is where China builds things at volume. If you need 20,000 units of a hardware product with tight tolerances and a repeatable price, Dongguan factories were probably making a similar product for someone else last month.
Cluster
What Dongguan makes
- Metal fabrication and hardware
- Plastic injection moulding at volume
- Electromechanical assembly (motors, actuators)
- OEM manufacturing for global brands
- Toys, consumer products, and gadgets
Why here
Why overseas buyers source from Dongguan
- Deep pool of factories with 500–5,000 employee scale — comfortable range for orders of 10,000+ units.
- Mature tooling shops that make injection moulds cheaper and faster than most alternatives.
- Strong hardware-and-electronics hybrid capability — the geographic complement to Shenzhen’s design bench.
- Historically the largest cluster for OEM/ODM manufacturing for European and American brands.
- Lower rents than Shenzhen typically translate to 5–10% lower per-unit prices at the same volume.
Operations
How I work on the ground in Dongguan
01
Volume-first quoting
I brief factories with your target monthly volume up front. It filters out shops that quote small orders as ‘yes’ but can’t hold price when you scale.
02
Tooling audit before deposit
For injection-moulded parts I inspect the tool design and the tool-maker’s shop before you pay for the mould. A cheap mould that fails at 50,000 shots is not cheap.
03
DUPRO checkpoints
For orders above 5,000 units I schedule during-production inspections at 30% and 70% completion — cheaper than fixing everything at pre-shipment.
